Pyrogallol Isolation, Characterization, Cytotoxicity, Antioxidant and Bioactive Potentials on Selected Bacterial and Fungi

ABSTRACT

Natural products from medicinal plants such as pure compounds from Barringtonia asiatica extracts, provide unlimited opportunities for new drug leads because of the challenges associated with resistance pathogens as a result of chemical synthesised agent, due to an increasing demand for chemical diversity in screening programs, seeking therapeutic drugs from natural products, and the interest particularly in the plants used throughout the world as food. The aim of this paper is to isolate and ascertain the biological activity of the pure compound this include the extraction, isolation and characterization, antioxidant, cytotoxicity, antibacterial and antifungal potential of the pure compound. The analysis of the isolated compound involves the applications of common TLC and Column chromatography, Characterizations; GCMS, NMR and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) as discussed. Pyrogallol was isolated from the stem-bark extract of Barringtonia asiatica and significant biological activity, cytotoxicity and antioxidant potential was observed with the pure compound.
